Dammit Ryan, you've done it again...

I am actually really pissed at Nate Elbrecht for NOT telling me to run out and buy the new ryan adams and the cardinals cd, Jacksonville City Nights.

I just popped it into my truck, and its so damn beautiful. and flawless. and brilliant. And not for everyone. For someone who is not already a fan of Ryan, I wouldnt start them off on this album. But it could be my favorite. The jury is out.

It is full of mournfully poignant and twangy steel guitars, harmonica, or just stripped down bare bones piano, with songs about cigarettes, beer and getting your heart ripped out of your chest, basically my three favorite pastimes at one point or another.

And the man has his priorties in order, with lines like "Give me a shot, a beer, and a kiss before I go".

Ryan, We salute you.

I for one freely admit that my musical sensabilities are far too pop oriented for a CD such as this. However, for someone as impressively "above" or "below" pop culture as Dru I'm sure that the fact that this CD appeals to 1.25% percent of the population actually increases his enjoyment of it. Subversatastic sir.

Elbrecht,

we need to win the bishop over. Should we start him out on "Gold" or "Heartbreaker"?

second off i recognize that most people need to start with gold or heartbreaker to fully appreciate ryan adams. in this case, however, you need to take into account where bishop is in life. we need to determine where the ryan adam's music and bishop's life intersect. i think you know where i'm going with this. rock and roll is the album for bishop. just lsiten to http://audio52.archive.org/1/audio/ryanadams2002-11-15/ryanadams2002-11-15d2t06_vbr.mp3> wish you were here and read the lyrics.

Cotton candy and a rotten mouth
You know you're so fucked up
You know I couldn't help but have it for you

And everybody knows the way I walk
And knows the way I talk
And knows the way I feel about you
It's all a bunch of shit
And there's nothing to do around here
It's totally fucked up
I'm totally fucked up
Wish you were here

And streets that only turn to boulevards
And houses with back yards
and it's raining like hell on the cars
And everybody knows the way I walk
And knows the way I talk
Knows the way I feel about you
It's all a bunch of shit
And there's nothing to do around here
It's totally fucked
I'm totally fucked
Wish you were here

And if I could have my way
We'd take some drugs
And we'd smile
We'd smile
We'd smile
But not tonight, my dear
Wish you were here
Wish you were here
Wish you were here
Wish you were here

nate...

i dont know how i feel about that suggestion. while i agree with your point about his life,,, i just think that album might a little to chaotic... for someone who likes his music pop and packaged and produced, i am leaning towards "Gold", first.

and once he gets hooked by the pop hooks (new york, answering bell, rescue blues etc), and then realizes his favorites songs are actually the mournful, emotional ballads (harder now that its over, wildflowers, la cienega, etc), it will be a natural transition to Heartbreaker, and he is pretty much toast from that point on.

thoughts?

I've decided that the best answer here is to cut Ryan Adams in half. Who wants the legs?

Nate, he liked the MP3 you posted. can you post an MP3 link for "Come pick me up"? so he can get a feel for heartbreaker?

drew i don't know why you would start bishop at heartbreaker. amazing album yes but if you aren't into alt country (americana?) then i don't see him appreciating it as much as the tom petty-ish gold album. bro new york, new york, gonna make me love you more and the baris a beautiful place (bonus disc).

of course he likes cash. johnny "killed a man just to watch him die," the first man to be sued by the state of california for starting a forest fire and he is the fuck*ng man in black. if you don't like cash let me know and i will personally come kick you ass.
